Music
Music is an art form whose medium is sound. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of music vary according to culture and social context. Music can be divided into genres and subgenres, although the dividing lines and relationships between music genres are often subtle, sometimes open to individual interpretation, and occasionally controversial. Music is so universal to the extend where it crosses the barriers (in this case, language) among the people in the world, for instance the official FIFA World Cup 2010 tune, Waka Waka (This Time For Africa) became the biggest hit in 2010 throughout the planet. Even most part of the song we don’t really understand what the lyrics are but still the song keeps getting played over and over and over again, and then everybody started to do the Waka Waka Eh Eh.
Different Cultures, Different Music
Every single culture in this world has its own unique style of music using different kinds of instruments. As for where I come from (Pahang of course), our music more associated with dances. For example the Zapin. Zapin Pekan to be exact. The main musical instruments are the Gambus, Rebana, Gendang and Marakas. Among the Asli genre songs are rhythmically intoned to the rhythm of the song zapin Lancang Kuning, Zapin Asli, Gendang Rebana and more.Other than that we also have the Gamela. This music is played in formal and non formal ceremony to accompany the Joget Pahang dance. Gamelan musicians comprise a total of nine male and six female dancers. Musical instruments used are the Gong Agong, Gong Sawokan, Gendang Ibu, Gendang Anak, Saron Pekin, Saron Baron I dan Saron Baron II, Gambang serta Kenong. I do listens to these kind of music as it can portray the culture of where I come from and the songs usually send good values and advices.
Music to My Ears
I listen to various genres of music. Almost anything goes as long as it makes sense to my ear. The kind of music that really can get me hyped up is the Trance, a genre of electronic dance music that developed in the 1990s. Trance generally characterized by a tempo of between 120 and 145 bpm, short repetitive melodic synthesizer phrases, and a musical form that builds up and breaks down throughout a track. It is a combination of many forms of music such as industrial, techno, and house. It is more melodic than Techno, and usually has harder beats than House.
Some says it’s just noise, I’d say there is no such thing as noise, only sound. And this is the sound that can take you on a journey of ecstasy.
Offbeat
I don’t listen to genres like Screamo (screaming/growl), Dangdut and few more names. To me it doesn’t make sense. For instance, Screamo. I don’t get the point of screaming and growling considered as a genre of music because to me it is irrational and not understandable. Why can’t they just sing like a normal human would ? What ? Trying to be different ? Yes, congratulations then. They achieved to sound less like a human, more like a beast. And as for Dangdut, purely an adult entertainment in other words, it is obscene.
Last Track
Instead of arguing about which music is good or bad, let's just enjoy the music and do the Waka Waka Eh Eh shall we ? :)
